Kwaidan(Kaidan,lit. 'Ghost Stories')is a 1964 Japaneseanthologyhorror filmdirected byMasaki Kobayashi. It is based on stories fromLafcadio Hearn's collections of Japanesefolk tales, mainlyKwaidan: Stories and Studies of Strange Things(1904), for which it is named. The film consists offour separate and unrelated stories.Kwaidanis anarchaictransliterationof the termkaidan, meaning "ghost story". Receiving critical acclaim, the film won theSpecial Jury Prizeat the1965 Cannes Film Festival,and received anAcademy Awardnomination forBest Foreign Language Film.

Subject: Taking Traditional Ghost Stories to a Grand New Level
Masaki Kobayashi's "Kwaidan"(1964) is undoubtedly one of the finest movies ever made. The narration, acting, cinematography, characterisation, editing - everything has been most meticulous and beautiful. The colour, lighting and the music score suit the whole movie perfectly. The theme most beautifully portrays the numerous emotions of the characters, and every aspect of the movie has a powerful impact. To say the least, it is just brilliant.
