What Is A Pixie Bob Haircut?

As the name suggests, a pixie bob haircut is a blend of a bob and a pixie style, hence why it is commonly blended and referred to as a 'bixie' cut.

'The classic feature of a bob is that the weight and movement is featured at the baseline around the neck and jawline,' explains Maria Sotiriou, co-founder of Silke London. 'Whereas a pixie bob will have the weighted area higher around the crown, the front sides are tapered and less heavy.'

If still unsure, have a quick scan for celebrity references; Linda Evangelista’s iconic transition to short hair in the eighties and Elizabeth Debicki in The Night Manager are two great examples. Other notable celebrities are Cara Delevingne, Tilda Swinton, Zoe Kravitz and Anne Hathaway. We'll always adore a nineties hair resurgence, personally.

How Do You Cut A Pixie Bob Haircut?

'For me the best way to cut a pixie bob is to work with a razor to allow for all aspects of the cut to infuse together and become seamless,' says Aaron Firmstone, National Lead Educator for Bumble and Bumble. 'A pixie bob will work for most face shapes but should be adapted to each individual to best compliment their features and enhance their natural hair texture and density.'

How Do You Style A Pixie Bob Haircut?

Like any short or layered hairstyle, it's important to take your natural wave or texture into account. This will impact everything from how long styling takes to how frequently you'll need to refresh your trim.

'For straighter hair types, the best way to style a pixie bob is to use a round brush and get lift and shape through the hair from root to tip,' says Firmstone. 'For curlier hair, I would recommend twisting and scrunching the hair around the face while it’s wet and using no-mark clips to either add or remove volume.'

Whether you're blessed with natural volume and waves, or your fine lengths require a little more finesse, Firmstone stresses the importance of keeping the hair hydrated and protected from heat.'Use the Bumble and bumble Hairdresser's Invisible Oil Primer first. I would then go in with Thickening Dryspun Texture Spray for lifted body and texture (so it doesn’t sit flat!), or Curl Defining Cream for those with curls.'

What Face Shapes Will Look Best In A Pixie Bob Haircut?

As is with any haircut, it's important not to just copy and paste the style you like; it has to be adapted to suit your personal features. As a general rule, pixie cuts tend to look best on oval, square, and heart-shaped faces, says Katy Grimshaw, founder of Spectrum One Hair Extensions.

'I would always recommend considering your face shape before getting this cut and working with your stylist to adapt according to what suits you best,' she says. 'Those who have smaller, petite features are well suited to shorter, more tapered versions of the look. If you have larger or wider areas of your face, take this into consideration when choosing a version of this style as it can create the illusion of widening your facial features.'
